The Network for Black Professionals is a not-for-profit, social justice organisation recognised in the Learning and Skills Sector as the authority on race equality and the leading lobbyist for a more representative workforce. Black-led and established for 12 years, it is committed to supporting the sector to achieve greater equality and diversity in the area of race.
In 1998, there were only two Black principals (0.2% of the sector) – and the pool of senior and middle managers that might comprise the principals of the future was shrinking. At present there are still only 13 Black principals – less that 4% of the total – and the number of other senior managers remains small. In contrast, more than 20% of students in FE colleges are from Black and minority ethnic communities. www.nbp.org.uk

The WLN is a member-based organisation which aims to develop a strong, dynamic and influential network of female leaders, to offer support and to promote equality of opportunity throughout the FE and learning and skills sector. It was established in 2007 as a successor to the original Women’s Network, to raise awareness of important issues regarding the career progression for women in the sector.
Female college principals in England only constitute 36%, while women comprise 64% of the workforce. In two regions, fewer than 25% of principals are women and in sixth form colleges only 26% of principals are women.
